| Would you recommend anyone in the Pac NW to install a Monitor on my IP 380?

You might give Lisa at Port Townsend Rigging a call. Very good to deal with and at a fair price.

Thank you, I will. We'll be at the mini-vous this weekend, you? We should get together the 4 boats that are going South this summer and have our own session--sharing plans, thoughts and concerns.

KKMI in SF bay area installed my Hydrovane. Way better wind vane - no lines to mess with. Smaller footprint .. Installed "off center" so access gate can still be used and can still hoist dingy on davits. Send me your email address and I'll forward you my installation pictures. Chuck works like a charm. (Chuck, the vane autopilot is going to be doing most of the driving)
Southern Star is heading south late this summer then onto NZ. We're presently living aboard at Emerycove.

| The Hydrovane looks good. I've seen pictures of them mounted at center with the ladder still usable. I'm still going with the Monitor, though with a SwingGate so the swim step and ladder can still be used. The Monitor came with the boat when I bought Charm two years ago.

| What are the main differences between the Monitor and the Hydrovane? In what ways should their performance differ?

Both operate on the same basic principle. The Hydrovane has less moving parts and has a small footprint altoug the HV migh be a bit more expensive. HV has no lines and operates on it own rudder with the ships rudder lashed. While the monitor is "sync'd" with the wheel acting more like a trim tab. with lines running from unit over to the wheel. Prefer the HV because it clean and simple.

Thanks Mark. Does the HV require heavier wind to operate than a Monitor? Are there any downsides to having it operate as the rudder? What do you suppose the cost differential is?
Sorry to interrogate, it's an occupational habit!

| Nope .. HV and monitor need the about the same wind to operate. Can work upwind and downwind just as well. No downsides to having the HV act as rudder. In fact if boat is well trimmed prior to swithing over to the HV, then pressure on the HV rudder is very light. The HV tracks perfectly .. i have my HV offset from the centerline over to starboard and it still drives the boat perfectly straight on either tack ... go to their website and read the reviews ... its clearly the better product
