Hi there,

I am looking to buy an Island Packet 31 in Europe. Most are offered in the US and I am also curious how asking prices relate to the European market. Currently I am in touch with one broker who offers an IP31. However, the boat history, maintenance and documentation from the last 10 years is widely missing. Hence, I don't want to run into surprises. She seems in almost original condition with not too many upgrades. A boat from a knowledgeable owner would be my choice. Please feel free to contact me for offers.

Cheers, Bastian

Hello Bastian,

You won't find many IP31's in the European market; in fact there's only one listed in the Owners Registry here on IP Home Port and only one listed for sale on Yacht World (which may or may not be the same boat).

As I recall Island Packet did not have any distribution partners in the European market until sometime in the 1990's, i.e. after the IP31 ended production, so my guess is that any of that model in the region would have either been sailed over or shipped in by an individual owner.

If your heart is set on an IP31 then you may need to rely on a thorough marine survey and sea trial to assess the condition of whatever boat(s) might be available to you.

Good luck!

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the quick reply and info. That's helpful. The IP31 ticks a lot of boxes for me. Especially the keel shape and interior space design. Whereas on the other hand thought already about the difficulties that may/may not arise when I need spare parts. The only way seems to ship them from the US which can be even more tricky in these Corona times. The broker mentioned, the IP was supposedly delivered to her owner in the Netherlands and would have Euro VAT clearance. She is built in 1985. Well, with no distribution partner before 1990, that's a question to look into.

I add a couple of pictures of areas that caught my intention on the first quick view, such as the deck teak rails, the mast collar which seems to be accountable for some water found in the bilge after a rainy day.

Thanks again! Much helpful info here in the community.

I wouldn't worry much about the spares issue; you should be able to source most items locally with the same or equivalent parts.

You may want to contact Bill Bolin at Island Packet Ancestry with the HIN of the boat in question to see if he has any history on file relative to the export process.

Plenty of IP owners in Europe have no parts issues. I got a US based forum member to get me a battery charger trip switch as the part was not available here and I did not wish to fit a part with a different footprint. That and a Raritan service kit is all I have sourced from the US in 12 years of owning IP's.
Try looking at other models, there are normally some around.

Good luck.

I can't comment on the spares situation in Europe, but, so far, all of the bits I have bought for my IP31 have been generic stuff, from local chandleries.

I can tell you that we are wholeheartedly enjoying our IP31. he is a very capable and comfortable boat that suits us very well. The boat still, after 9 years consistently outperforms our expectation.

In fact, we are leaving on a 3 week trip tonight.

Hi, thanks for your info and reference to the spare parts.

My purchase is on hold now for I found the HIN number on the transom damaged. See pictures. Stuart gave me a hint already about the IP ancestry archive. But also here, without HIN the boat cannot be identified. The broker in the Netherlands does not provide any document with the hull number on it. Very strange. It's an official reputable (?) broker. The second hidden plate with the HIN in the engine room has been removed.

Unfortunately, I have a bad feeling to buy until I get clarification on this matter.

For all you guys, it's a perfect beautiful boat. And happy sailing.

Hi Matt,

If you get a chance, would you please check in your engine compartment and confirm the location of the second HIN?  Yours is a similar vintage of the same model that Bastian is looking at ...

Thanks!
