Is there a cross-reference table on the internet or does anyone have a list of alternate oil filters that can be used with the Yanmar 4JHBE (44hp) engine.  For example, what Baldwin or Fram filters could be used?  Other brands?

Thanks,

Neal

start by getting your original oil filter part number, it's written on the filter or use this site:

http://www.oldportmarine.com/spares_4jh.htm

the site above gives you part numbers for basic maintainence parts for the yanmar series. i use a napa gold series oil filter.

i walk into napa and have them cross reference the part for me.

napa could also do the whole thing for you. just give them the engine specs.

no, i do not work for napa.

if you use the parts number from the old port site above to obtain a new filter before you take the old one off, make sure you look at the old filter when you take it off so there is a match of that number and the number given on the site.

napa's cross reference site is     http://www.napafilters.com/filterlookup/

wix's cross reference site is

      http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/results.asp?PartNo=129150-35153&imageField.x=19&imageField.y=9

good luck

I would not use anything but Yanmar filter after going through Mac Boring class.  the Oil pressure on deisel engines is higher then gas engines. I  have seen cut away of Yanmar and a Fram its not hipe.

While I agree that all things being equal I would prefer the Yanmar filter...Yanmar is not the only manufacturer of diesel engines and Wix and Fram make very capable filters for diesels.  A reputable dealer will match not only the physical mounting requirements for the filter but also the relief-valve pressure and thru-flow requirements.

Pricing differences are usually only pennies but I would like to have the cross-reference for those occasions where a factory match cannot be made.  What-will-work and what constitutes a proper substitute are two different approaches that should be communicated when buying a filter.

The "marine" designation is not a "difference" in many diesels.  For instance Kubota supplies farm equipment and marine equipment (Universal).  They are the same engine.  They are modified externally to adapt to the marine environment but internally they are the same so oil pressures and requirements are the same but...the filters have different part numbers and paint schemes.  If you are confident of your substitute then buy the cheaper one...you could save...maybe a dollar.

Many small engines will accept the Fram PH 3593A filter including the Yanmar 3/4JH engines on our boats. However Yanmar advises against using anything but the Yanmar filter in their marine engines. The Yanmar filter has a concave innard mesh which mates with the engine filter housing when the filter is installed.

If you look at the Fram or other filters, the inner mesh is flat which is why Yanmar says not to use them. Yanmar says that because the inside of the non-Yanmar filter is flat, it creates a gap which allows unfiltered oil back into the engine. That is according to the 3 day Yanmar Diesel school I attended.

Oddly enough, there is no such situation in the Yanmar industrial engine like the 3TN82 engine I have on my John Deere tractor, which is near identical to the marine JH sereies. It is OK to use the Fram 3593A on that engine. I often wondered whether Yanmar designed that situation on purpose just to market their own filters to boat owners. In any event, I buy the Yanmar filters for the boat in case lot and the price is pretty close to other filters.
